5. Aldnoah Zero

Character: Inaho Kaizuka

Inaho Kaizuka

Summary:

The discovery of a hypergate on the Moon once allowed the human race to teleport to Mars. Those who chose to settle there unearthed a technology far more advanced than that of their home planet, which they named “Aldnoah.” This discovery led to the founding of the Vers Empire of Mars and a declaration of war against the “Terrans,” those who stayed behind on Earth. However, a battle on the moon—later called “Heaven’s Fall”—caused the hypergate to explode, destroying the moon and leading the two planets to establish an uneasy ceasefire.

Their peace was a fragile one, however. Fifteen years later, high school student Inaho Kaizuka witnesses the plotted assassination of the Vers Empire’s Princess Asseylum Vers Allusia, who had come to Earth in hopes of repairing the relationship between the empire and its homeland. The ceasefire is shattered, and the Martians declare war on the Terrans once again. In the face of this insurmountable enemy, Inaho and his friends must now fight against the Vers Empire to settle the war once and for all.

Among them is the socially awkward college student Shiroe, whose confusion and shock lasts only a moment as, a veteran of the game, he immediately sets out to explore the limits of his new reality.

Shiroe must learn to live in this new world, leading others and negotiating with the NPC “natives” in order to bring stability to the virtual city of Akihabara. He is joined by his unfortunate friend Naotsugu, having logged in for the first time in years only to find himself trapped, and Akatsuki, a petite but fierce assassin who labels Shiroe as her master. A tale of fantasy, adventure, and politics, Log Horizon explores the elements of gaming through the eyes of a master strategist who attempts to make the best of a puzzling situation.

Character Summary:

Shiroe is commonly referred to as ‘Shiroe the strategist’ by his peers and is very adept on the battlefield. He is able to devise complex plans that maximizes the talents of the players in his guild.

He is a complex problem solver and eventually manages to have huge influence over the city of Akihabara. Log Horizon is Sword Art Online with BETTER execution, plot, and a more interesting character (Shiroe is a 10x more interesting character than Kirito).

3. Youjo Senki (the Saga of Tanya The Evil)

Character: Tanya von Degurechaff

Tanya the Evil

Summary:

Tanya Degurechaff is a young soldier infamous for predatorial-like ruthlessness and an uncanny, tactical aptitude, earning her the nickname of the “Devil of the Rhine.” Underneath her innocuous appearance, however, lies the soul of a man who challenged Being X, the self-proclaimed God, to a battle of wits—which resulted in him being reincarnated as a little girl into a world of magical warfare.

Hellbent on defiance, Tanya resolves to ascend the ranks of her country’s military as it slowly plunges into world war, with only Being X proving to be the strongest obstacle in recreating the peaceful life she once knew. But her perceptive actions and combat initiative have an unintended side effect: propelling the mighty Empire into becoming one of the most powerful nations in mankind’s history.

Character Summary:

Tanya is one of the most captivating characters on this list. Do NOT be fooled by her appearance. She is VICIOUS, COLDHEARTED, AND RUTHLESSLY EFFICIENT. She has a legion of mages under her command and does not tolerate failure from any of her subordinates.

What’s really great about this anime is the fantasy element that’s incorporated into the fighting. Seeing Tanya use magic to obliterate her enemies is very entertaining. It’s very ACTION packed. Furthermore, her inner monologues and how she works her way up the military is also insightful.

2. Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)

Character: Yang Wenli

Yang Wen-li

Summary:

The 150-year-long stalemate between the two interstellar superpowers, the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, comes to an end when a new generation of leaders arises: the idealistic military genius Reinhard von Lohengramm, and the FPA’s reserved historian, Yang Wenli.

While Reinhard climbs the ranks of the Empire with the aid of his childhood friend, Siegfried Kircheis, he must fight not only the war, but also the remnants of the crumbling Goldenbaum Dynasty in order to free his sister from the Kaiser and unify humanity under one genuine ruler. Meanwhile, on the other side of the galaxy, Yang—a strong supporter of democratic ideals—has to stand firm in his beliefs, despite the struggles of the FPA, and show his pupil, Julian Mintz, that autocracy is not the solution.

As ideologies clash amidst the war’s many casualties, the two strategic masterminds must ask themselves what the real reason behind their battle is.

via MyAnimeList.net

Character Summary:

Yang Wenli is a humble man and doesn’t really like the attention that comes with being an accomplished hero. This is very different from Reinhard, who I also could’ve chosen at this spot. I chose Yang because I feel that he is slightly better than Reinhard from a military standpoint when it comes to strategy. Yang is able to use his history background to outwit his opponents and has a vast knowledge of military philosophy and politics.

The Legend of the Galactic Heroes is the ANIME EQUIVALENT OF STAR WARS. Definitely one of the most UNDERRATED  anime titles you’ll find. This is a very long series but very worth the watch.

Studio: Artland, Magic Bus

Episodes: 110

Aired: Jan 8, 1988 to Mar 17, 1997

1. Code Geass

Character: Lelouch Lamperouge

LeLouch Lamperage

Summary:

In the year 2010, the Holy Empire of Britannia is establishing itself as a dominant military nation, starting with the conquest of Japan. Renamed to Area 11 after its swift defeat, Japan has seen significant resistance against these tyrants in an attempt to regain independence.

Lelouch Lamperouge, exiled prince of Britannia, unfortunately finds himself caught in a crossfire between the two nations’ armed forces. He is able to escape, however, thanks to the timely appearance of a mysterious girl named C.C., who bestows upon him Geass, the “Power of Kings.” Realizing the vast potential of his newfound “power of absolute obedience,” Lelouch embarks upon a perilous journey as the masked vigilante known as Zero, leading a merciless onslaught against Britannia in order to get revenge once and for all.

via MyAnimeList.net

Character Summary:

Lelouch is an anti hero and is a very polarizing figure. We see Lelouch’s genius from the first episode as he is seen easily beating his older upperclassmen at chess. On the battlefield, he is impeccable. He’s able to map out various scenarios and choose the best option available. When it comes to decision making,  he makes sure the situation fulfills the right conditions before proceeding. He can be narcissistic but he’s very caring and compassionate towards his loved ones. He is very charismatic and eventually leads a nation against Britannia.

Code Geass has it all. REVENGE, POLITICS, ROMANCE, MECHA, THE HARSH REALITIES OF WAR, DISCRIMINATION, etc. It does a great job on touching on various topics and Lelouch is a very well written character.

Studio: Sunrise

Episodes: 25 (first season), 25 (second season)

Aired: Oct 6, 2006 to Jul 29, 2007
